Nuru is the one form on the menu that rebuilds the room before it begins. A clear seaweed gel, warmed, heavy, nearly frictionless, takes the place of oil, protective sheeting takes the place of the coverlet, and the therapist works with the length of her body rather than her hands alone. Done properly it is the deepest contact bodywork there is, and done properly is the only way this desk sends it.

01 Where it comes fromOrigin The gel predates the massage. Japanese bathhouses prized nori extract because it held heat and water against the skin as no oil could, and a full-contact form grew up around that property in the bathhouses of postwar Kawasaki. It crossed to Europe once the gel itself became exportable, and it adapted to hotel floors by carrying the bathhouse in a bag, sheeting standing in for tile, the shower standing in for the plunge.

02 How the hands workTechnique With friction removed, the usual grammar of massage is rewritten: no kneading, no gripping, pressure delivered by lowered weight and read from your breathing rather than felt through resistance. The stroke does not end and restart, it turns. Keeping the gel above skin temperature is half the craft, and she tends to it throughout.

03 In the roomWhat to expect Ten minutes of preparation buy the rest of the session: heating raised, bed sheeted, gel standing in warm water while you shower. What actually protects the bed?

Layered sheeting of her own, laid before the gel is uncorked and folded away after the rinse. Nothing the hotel owns touches the session, the mattress stays dry through all of it, and the bed is returned to the state the evening found it in.

Why does the desk keep recommending two hours for this form?

Arithmetic. Warming the room, sheeting the bed and showering are honest costs of the technique, and inside a single hour they eat the opening act. Across two hours they become a footnote, and the long middle stretch, the part the form is famous for, gets the time it was designed to have.

Is nuru available as a pair booking?

It is, at €360 the hour, and the desk will want to know the room type first, gel work with two therapists needs width around the bed that a snug canal-ring double does not offer. A suite takes it without a second thought.
