Guests who read contracts for a living sometimes ask the desk about the cooling-off period. The answer is short, and it is given before anything else on this page, because every other term here rests on it.
The Dutch Civil Code, at Article 6:230p, names a handful of services to which the consumer's right of withdrawal does not extend. Among them: any service the provider is to carry out on a fixed date, or inside a fixed period. That right of withdrawal is the fourteen-day window most people have heard of: the Wet Koop op Afstand, which is how the Netherlands gives effect to the EU Consumer Rights Directive, ordinarily allows a consumer fourteen days to step back from a service purchased remotely, and a booking sent as a message from a hotel bed counts as a remote purchase in the ordinary sense.
A reservation with this house is always for a stated hour on a stated day, or for a stated night. It is, in the language of the article, a service tied to a fixed time, and so it belongs to the excluded category: the date-specific-service exemption. The consequence is not that the guest gives the fourteen days up. It is that they never begin. There is no signature to give and nothing to decline; the window simply does not open. Someone in a boutique house on the canal ring, a serviced tower on the Zuidas or an aparthotel a few streets from the museum quarter writes to the booking line, chooses a length, and hears back within about ten minutes. She is at the door between forty and sixty minutes later from any central address. Four examples show how the arithmetic runs. A three-hour session reserved for the following week is EUR 540 on the ladder; EUR 270 is sent ahead and EUR 270 is paid in the room. Two therapists for three hours is EUR 1,080; EUR 540 secures it and EUR 540 follows on arrival. The overnight is EUR 1,250, of which EUR 625 is taken at acceptance and EUR 625 when she reaches you. A guest writing for the first time and asking for ninety minutes tonight is at EUR 270; the desk confirms, EUR 135 clears, she leaves, and the remaining EUR 135 is handed to her at the door. No night, weekend or travel supplement exists inside the ring, so half the listed figure is the entire deposit.
The deposit travels by card, through Revolut, through Wise, or in cryptocurrency: the methods that settle electronically before anyone has left for your hotel. Bank transfer is not among them, and neither is PayPal. Cash cannot be a deposit either: cash arrives with the therapist, and a deposit has to exist before she leaves the house. Consider what has already occurred when a guest withdraws from an overnight on the Thursday before the Saturday. The desk has confirmed the therapist, taken the hotel and the room, and settled the timing with her. Her Saturday night is closed; two or three other requests that landed in the same window have been sent elsewhere. Because the reservation is an overnight, her transport has been arranged and often a second person has been scheduled around her absence. Every one of those steps was taken on the strength of the acceptance, and not one of them can be recovered once the guest withdraws.
The deposit is the cost of that work. It is not a fine for changing plans; it is the sum the reservation had already spent on the day the plans changed. This is also why the house publishes no refund schedule. There is no percentage returned for a week's warning, no reduced figure inside forty-eight hours, no free window at all. The expense was incurred when the office said yes, and a message sent later does not reach back and undo it. A deposit paid on a booking the guest then cancels stays with the house.
Two circumstances are treated differently. The first is an order from government that prevents the house from operating at all. The second is an illness serious enough that the session cannot take place. Where the desk accepts that one of these applies, the deposit is converted into credit and held against a future reservation. It is never turned back into money, whatever the circumstance, and each request is decided on its own facts by the office.
The door is kept deliberately narrow. A dinner that ran long, a clash in the diary, a cold, a rebooked flight, a move to a different hotel across the city, or a simple change of heart are not force majeure; the desk files them as ordinary cancellations, and the deposit remains where it is.
There is a category of booking the house does not regard as a cancellation at all. A reservation placed under an invented name, with a phone or a profile that is somebody else's, made as a joke, or abandoned by a person who never meant to be in the room when she knocked, is a false booking. Two kinds of reservation go ahead without half in advance: the returning guest's same-day hour or two, and the late request where she is already in the car. Trust of that kind does not erase the cost of a cancellation. Her journey, her closed hours and the declined requests are as real as on a reservation that paid half at acceptance. Should such a booking be cancelled, the office asks for a payment matching the deposit it would otherwise have carried. The policy is identical; only the moment of collection has moved.
Two further points complete the picture. A session that the guest ends before its time is charged in full, and no portion is returned, because the hour was held, she made the journey to reach it, and the minutes left over cannot be sold to anyone else that evening.
