The typical Amsterdam canal house is five or six metres wide, four or five storeys tall and much deeper than it is broad. Many were built as a merchant's home and warehouse in one, with living rooms at the front and storage at the back and in the attic. Today hundreds of them work as small hotels, sometimes a single house of eight rooms, sometimes two or three neighbouring houses joined inside. The type is not limited to the main canal ring. Canal house hotels stand along the Brouwersgracht, on the smaller canals of the Jordaan, near the Nieuwmarkt and on the edges of the old centre. What matters for a booking is the building itself: its stairs, its night arrangements and the size of the room at the end of the climb. In a house without a lift, the stairs are the whole arrival. Dutch staircases in these buildings are famously steep and turn tightly, sometimes with a rope instead of a handrail. The therapist travels light for exactly this reason and has climbed many of them. Tell the desk which floor you are on, so she knows before she starts up. Send the hotel name, the floor, the time and the length. The reply comes in about ten minutes with a name and a window of forty to sixty minutes. When she writes that she is outside, the easiest thing is to come down to the entrance hall and walk up with her; in a narrow house that also keeps the staircase clear for other guests.

A hotel of ten rooms rarely keeps a receptionist on duty all night. The owner or a manager usually leaves between ten and midnight, and the front door locks behind them. Guests are given a key or a code, and the hotel trusts them to use it responsibly. That trust is worth respecting: open the door for your visitor yourself and never pass the code on. Front rooms face the canal and are usually bigger than the rest, with tall windows and good light. Back rooms look over gardens and are quieter. Rooms on the highest floor sit under the roof beams, often with a sloping ceiling and a window set into the gable. Each suits a different booking, and the room you are in matters more than the hotel's star rating. A sensual hour or a tantra session fits any of them. A couples booking or four-hand work needs space on both sides of the bed, which the front rooms usually have and the attic rooms usually do not. Nuru needs warmth and a shower close by; old radiators take time, so turn the heating up early. If the bathroom is shared or across a landing, tell the desk before you book a form that needs it.

Canal houses were built of brick and timber, and the floors between storeys are wooden. Sound travels further than in a modern hotel, both through the floor and up the stairwell. Guests in these houses do well to keep music low, close doors softly and avoid long conversations on the landing, especially after eleven. None of this is a reason to avoid a booking; it is simply how the building works. The therapists who visit these houses know it and move quietly. A late evening in a canal house can be one of the calmest a guest spends in Amsterdam, provided both sides keep the stairwell in mind.

A canal house is priced like any other hotel. One guest with one therapist pays €180 for an hour, €270 for ninety minutes and €360 for two hours; the one-therapist overnight is €1,250. A single guest with two therapists pays €360 an hour, and so does a couple with one therapist. The table in each therapist profile sets out the other rows, including the overnight for two. A first booking with the house is confirmed with half the fee, as is any booking made more than a day ahead, any overnight and any two-therapist session. The half is paid by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto and is kept if the booking is cancelled. The balance is paid in the room in cash, by card or in crypto.
