The first practical question on a boat is how to get on it. Some have a wide, lit gangway from the quay; others have a narrow plank, a few steps down to the deck and a hatch or a small door. Tell the desk what the boarding looks like, and whether the boat is moored alone or in a row, because several boats on one quay can share a single house number. Send the hotel boat's name, the quay, the time and the length. The reply arrives in about ten minutes with a name and a window of forty to sixty minutes. Space on a boat is measured differently. A converted barge can have a large saloon and a proper double bed, while a cabin on a hotel boat may be little more than a bed with a narrow walkway along one side. Most hotel boats have good heating, but it can take time to warm a cabin that has been empty during the day. Turn the heating up when you send the booking, not when she arrives. The water is usually still in the canals, and boats barely move. On the wider water of the IJ, passing ferries and barges can send a gentle roll through a moored boat for a minute or two. A hotel boat is a small building with close neighbours, both on board and on the quay. Voices carry over water at night more than guests expect.
