Hotel boats, barges and floating rooms
Amsterdam has around two and a half thousand houseboats, most of them private homes. A smaller number are run as places to stay, and they come in a few kinds. There are hotel boats with several cabins and a host on board, converted cargo barges with one or two suites, and modern floating units moored in groups along the quays of the eastern docks and the western canals. This page is about the ones run as hotels, with a host, a check-in and house rules, rather than private boats rented from an owner. The difference matters: a hotel boat has a front desk of sorts, even if it is a single person, and it has rules about visitors in the way any small hotel does.
