The business hotel, as the desk knows it
Business hotels cluster where the work is: among the towers of the Zuidas, around the RAI convention centre, near Centraal Station for guests arriving by train, and along the main roads that lead into the centre. They are recognisable by their rooms more than their lobbies. A standard double of roughly twenty square metres, give or take a few, a desk and a proper chair, a king bed between two nightstands, blackout curtains, a walk-in shower, a kettle and a safe. The lifts usually need a keycard, the gym opens at six, and breakfast starts at half past six for guests with somewhere to be. For an evening visit this is uncomplicated territory. The rooms are warm, the layout is predictable, and a visitor in a good coat walking to the lifts at eleven at night looks like any other late arrival in a building that sees them hourly.
