Buying the room until two buys a morning that nobody ever schedules. The desk's favourite booking window is the one guests forget they own.
Every week, guests pay good money to extend a checkout to two in the afternoon, and then spend the purchased hours answering email in a lobby armchair. From this side of the arrangement, that is a small tragedy. The late checkout is the only time a hotel sells you that comes with no obligations attached, the meetings are done, the luggage is packed, the city has stopped asking anything of you, and it is the finest session window on the clock.
Take a checkout moved to 14:00. Breakfast ends at half past ten; the room is yours for three and a half unclaimed hours. A message sent with the last of the coffee has a therapist at the door before eleven, a two-hour session finished by one, and half an hour of margin left for the shower and the suitcase. Nothing about the day is compressed. The flight is still made. The only casualty is the lobby armchair.
Night work is our trade, but the late-morning booking has a character the night cannot copy. The floor is empty, everyone else surrendered their rooms at eleven, so the corridor is at its quietest of the entire day. Housekeeping has no claim on a room with a registered late departure. And a body massaged at midday travels differently: guests write afterwards, more than after any other window, to say the flight was the easiest they can remember. Rosa and Michelle, who both favour the day side of the rota, have made a modest specialty of exactly this booking.
The desk plans these sessions backward from the checkout, not forward from the message. Tell us the hour the room stops being yours and the departure that follows it, and the confirmation comes back with the session placed so that the ending is unhurried, because a massage with one eye on a suitcase is half a massage. The margin is built in at our end; you are not asked to calculate anything.
It needs saying once: this is not the same purchase as the overnight, which buys the night itself. The late checkout buys the morning after any night, including an ordinary one, and at the price hotels charge for two extra hours of room, it may be the cheapest venue this desk ever works in.
