False bookings and the protection of the therapist
A false booking is a reservation made under another person's name, number or account, or as a joke, along with any no-show that follows from one.
Every reservation is, in a sense, an introduction. A guest offers a name, a way of being reached and a room, and on the strength of those three things a woman agrees to cross the city at night. A false booking is one in which the name, the number or the purpose was not genuine.
What falls under the term
The house writes its criteria down so that nobody has to guess at them. A reservation counts as false when it was placed under a name the person does not hold, when it came from a telephone number or account belonging to someone else, or when it was made as a joke. A no-show that follows one of those three counts too, and nothing else does. A guest whose flight was diverted, or who simply forgot the hour, has cancelled rather than deceived, and the ordinary cancellation policy applies on its notice scale.
How the house responds
A short internal note is made, holding the date, what happened, and the name and number the reservation came from. The same kind of note follows a visit that a therapist ended because a limit she had set was pressed. The house keeps it for twelve months, shows it to nobody outside, and uses it for one purpose only: deciding whether to accept another reservation from the same person. For whom
The women on the roster walk into unfamiliar hotels alone and often late, along corridors they are seeing for the first time. Some of those buildings have a doorman and a night manager; others have a code on the street door and nobody at all. A false reservation costs her the evening at the very least, and the note is there so that the same name does not cost her a second one.
