A boutique hotel is a small, individually styled property, often in a converted historic building, where a busy ground floor gives way to quiet corridors.
Amsterdam has a particular gift for turning old buildings into small hotels. A former bank, a shipping office, a school or a row of merchants' houses becomes forty rooms with a restaurant at street level. These properties are usually independent, carefully designed and run by a compact team, and many guests of the house choose them for exactly that character.
A ground floor that belongs to the city
Many boutique hotels open their bar and dining room to the public until late. For an arrival this is an advantage: the lobby is full of people who are not staying, and one more visitor walking through is an ordinary sight. The contrast comes after the bar closes, when the same space empties and a single night porter may be the only member of staff in the building. In a hotel of that size the porter knows most faces, and a guest expecting a late arrival there can simply meet her at the entrance.
Old walls, new rooms
Conversions produce handsome rooms and a few practical quirks. Split-level rooms with the bed on a mezzanine, lifts that serve only some floors, corridors that change level by a few steps: all are common. Wooden floors and historic partitions also carry sound further than modern construction, so a lowered voice in the corridor and a television kept soft are a kindness to the room next door. None of this decides whether a visit works, only what the guest writes in the thread about the way up.
