Every confirmation is preceded by the same small catechism. What the desk asks, why it asks it, and the things it will never ask.
Between your message and the confirmation there is a short interval, ten minutes, usually less, in which the desk does its actual work. Most of that work is three questions, asked of you if the first message left them open, asked of the rota if it did not. They are worth explaining, because guests who answer them unprompted routinely have a therapist at the door while others are still mid-correspondence.
Not out of curiosity, out of cartography. The building fixes the quarter, the quarter fixes which of the fifteen is nearest, and nearness is the entire secret of an honest arrival time. It also settles practicalities the guest cannot see: whether the lift needs a keycard, whether the entrance changes after midnight, whether two visitors should arrive together or a minute apart. A name is ideal; a street or a quarter will do to begin. The room number is never needed until she is minutes away.
Which form, how long, one guest or two. These three facts decide what goes into the bag, sheeting travels for nuru and stays home for tantra, and whether one woman is dispatched or a practised pair. They also decide whom: the rota is not interchangeable, and the desk matches the strongest hands to the form named. A guest who writes only massage, tonight receives a sensible default; a guest who names the form receives the specialist.
Anything the venue does that a floor plan would not predict. A partner asleep in the second bed of a family room. A bathroom under the eaves with no standing height. Heating that takes an hour to mean it. None of these cancels a booking, each one merely bends the choice of form or the packing of the bag, and it bends them gracefully only when known in advance.
Your surname. Your reason. Who the second guest is to you. Why three in the morning. The desk's questions all point at logistics, and stop precisely where logistics stop. What a guest chooses to volunteer is received and forgotten; what he chooses to withhold was never required. The whole catechism exists so that the knock lands at the right door, at the agreed minute, with the right things in the bag, and it has no other ambitions whatsoever.
